EDITORIAL - Earth Objective

Everyone loves the land. But how seriously do the aesthetic, ecological and economic potential of raw-earth architecture take seriously? Architects such as Herzog & de Meuron or Wang Shu have recently made themselves advocates with remarkable achievements, but these examples remain exceptions. For many, the earth remains a medieval technique still practiced in the depths of Africa, and celebrated as such in the 1960 years by some cool babas having abused lysergic acids. Is it this condescension that explains the systematic forgetting of the use of the raw earth in all the histories of architecture?
Yet, between 1789 and 1979 (during the timid renewal symbolized by the construction of the village of land built in Villefontaine and the foundation of CRAterre), the earthen construction, by various alternative means, accompanied modernity, from Loos to Le Corbusier Passing by Frank Lloyd Wright and Schindler. This history which begins in Lyon during the French Revolution before going around the world remains unknown. That is why we wanted to tell you this summer, hoping that her reading will initiate new vocations
Emmanuel Caille
